How does surgery help figure skating? I'm intrigued!

Read the news and you'll see it isn't about surgeries helping figure skating. Apparently it used to be required that biological male transgender athletes (at least under some circumstances) had to have undergone gender reassignment surgery before being qualified to compete as women. That constraint is now gone.

Point being, women athletes are inherently better than men in very few disciplines, figure skating being one. Perhaps gymnastics, too?

Men with their greater muscle mass (on average) may still have an edge on jumps and spins. The question is, does a transgender woman bring those characteristics to the women's program and is it an unfair advantage? When all the top men can do a quad but not all the women, it seems like there is an edge. But I would never claim to be an expert on figure skating! (Or most other sports)
