Thus a crowd of protesters arrived at the Capital to urge the Congress to investigate. I think that some who didn't want that investigation to proceed and understanding crowd dynamics turned that crowd into a mob which them erupted into a riot. Planners understood that tossing flash bangs, tear gas and rubber bullets into a packed crowd would cause a response. Agitators using bullhorns urged the mob to enter the building and there was violence on one side and doors opened on another side. Security was below par despite the President authorizing troops should Congress request them and Congress did not.
As time progresses we will understand more. The public outrage over the riot has been fueled by the press but the public is now understanding that politics has been quite overheated in response.
