What took me decades to understand (much to my lack of psychological understanding) is that there is a significant proportion of the population that you simply can not reason with. They believe things and do things because that's the way they want it. And no amount of reason or cajoling is going to change them. They don't want to understand. They want things their way. Period. No questions asked. (These are the people who too often respond to their intelligent children's question with: "Because I said so!" They are authoritarian is make up and view the social world as a strict hierarchy with those above them to be deferred to and those below them to be bossed around and ordered about.

My Dad used to say "Because I said so!" when I was a young person in the 60s. In hindsight, I think it was as good an answer as any. It would immediately get our attention and we would quit whining or complaining. He would also say " When you are a grown up you will understand and you will be able to make your own decisions. Until then, this is my house and you will do as your told. Nowadays, too many adults bow down to their princes and princesses.
