DDT, a synthetic chemical first used as a pesticide in 1939, was effective against lice, fleas, and mosquitoes, carriers of typhus, plague, malaria, and yellow fever. It works by disrupting an insect’s nervous system, _but produces no known toxic effects while stored in the fat.
DDT was the first of the modern synthetic insecticides developed in the 1940s, helping control diseases such as typhus and malaria. It is a contact insecticide, meaning it kills bugs upon contact and does not need to be sprayed directly. When sprayed on bedbugs, it penetrates their exoskeletons and affects their nervous systems, leading to their eventual death.
DDT is effective and popular for several reasons, including its ability to continue killing insects for months after application and its ability to persist in the environment. However, it was canceled due to environmental concerns.
