I hope that the EU doubles down so Trump moves to a 200% tariff so the linguini-spined EU bureaucrats have to live with the consequences of their choices.
Crisis in Dallas! The aritocrats Dom Perignon is going up in price! Call out the gendarmes! And the French Foriegn Legion! Where's Marcel Marceau when you need him! Get Inspector Clouseau on the case! Sacre bleu!
On a more serious note, in the mid-late 1800's the phylloxeria was gutting the French wine industry specifically but also large parts of the European, as well. No one had any idea on how to defeat to aphids that carried it . But two enterprising Frenchmen knew that grapes of all types had been brought to the New World, and specifically, Texas, centuries early, came to Denison, Texas. They took cutting from there, and other parts of Texas, mainly East Texas, back to France and then spread them all over the Continent. The great wine and spirit connoisseur, Alexis Lachine, famously observed that 70% of all French wines are descendant from those same said Texas cuttings.
Anecdotally, my better half grew up in Bellaire and before the huge population growth there in the late '60's forward, would go out with her friends into the forests that were outside their home and they'd gorge themselves on grapes that grew wild. We live in the Katy area now and there are wild grape vines all over the place in the green belts and Barker Reservoir. The best aroma when out bicycling or walking!
I love to hear of the spacious lovely USA even though I am European and wish the land of the free and home of the brave only greater success. Our European/Western civilization rests fully on the broad American shoulders so may God protect and bless the USA!
Let’s cut to the chase & go for a total trade embargo on the EU and China. Neither the EU nor China are represented by elected people. Neither will recover from being embargoed. While we are at it, Embargo India to eliminate evasion, & terminate the H1B program and deport all H1Bs immediately.
Indeed. USA and Russia - elected leadership. The EU, as Gorbachev noted way back, was recreating the Soviet Union and like Canada has no leadership elected by the people. The UK has a PM imposed on the people by a party that won less than 20% of the popular vote. Canada has installed a neo Marxist globalist PM who has never been elected and has zero mandate, to replace Fidel Castro's bastard blackface son who has lived a lie since conception.. Fascinating.
The trannies, mentally ill and "artists" our public schools have been produring for the past 40 years can't make much of anything. They're takers, not makers.
Your viticultural tastes must be very high indeed, or perhaps they are just peculiar. Of course there’s no accounting for taste, good or bad. Have you tried Washington State and Oregon wines? I learned long ago that there is a random relationship between the cost of a bottle of wine and the quality. But then again, there is no accounting for my taste either.
Your dislike of American wines astonishes me. I live in Europe, i drink wines from all over the world. American wines stand strong against European wines and others. I handled the sale to the public for a winery in Chianti.for 13 years. I have a great deal of knowledge in wines. The rest of the article makes valid points. But you have ended on a ludictous note.
I share John's viepoint. I exclusively drink Burgundy for red wine. Also drink a lot of Champagne. The most insipid comment from the Trump admin was it would "help the American champagne industry".
For white I also drink Loire wines, and there are two NZ whites that I find acceptable (Cloudy Bay and Greywacke). Also German whites, Riesling from Rheingau and Mosel.
So, you want Europe to fight fair, right? lol They have to hit back as hard as they can and that means hitting Trump's constituency. I don't smoke, drink or do drugs and if there is anything that I don't need it is more stuff. I've been a life long stuff specialist. The tariffs are hardest on young people and while they have my sympathy there isn't much that I can do to help them.
"When goods don't cross borders soldiers do." (Bastiat) By employing bad management for decades and spending money like it grows on trees we have brought woe onto ourselves. We tear down dams and decommission perfectly good nuclear generating plants one of which was brand new fresh out of the box and never fired up. It takes between 15 and 20 years to build a new plant while S Korea for instant puts them up in 2-3 years. Yes, others are also on the wrong track in many ways but America has set a perfectly awful example. If there is anything that will help us it is respect for private property, market wages and prices including market interest rates.
Should you find yourself in need, Mexico and South America both produce some lovely, cost effective wines. If you like reds, Oregon and Washington produce delicious Pinot Noirs.
What a childish respond by the EU. Clearly, there are no adults in the room.
EU leaders are just a little above Canada’s Trudeau/Carney batch. Countries are weak economically, militarily, and offer little stimulation to citizens! This might explain their kindergarten level of thinking?? And hey John, there are many great wines that don’t originate in the EU!!

Come on, there are some good California wines.
Come on! The Aussies and NZers make fantastic wine, as do Argentina and Chile. European wine is so old hat.
But a very good old hat 😁
This is kinda like kids fighting over Tonka toys in a sandbox. I put my money on Trump. Buy American.

Meh…who cares? White noise. The dust will settle.

Made In USA needs to be on every product we buy.
Canada not represented by elected official

The EU will not back down, ever. They are not logical they are ideologues.
They don't and won't do deals...
200% is the response for ideologues and I think there are higher numbers waiting to be employed.

You don’t need to drink alcohol.
How is VAT a tariff?
We have to pay that as consumers, regardless of where stuff comes from.
Do you not have something similar with sales taxes?
Try the whites from New Zealand
